Another photograph from historian Mr R Chilvers vast collection of photographs.

Mr Walter Devonish, Smallholder and 'Carrier'
is seen here opening the gate to Babthorpe Hall farm in  approximately 1930.
He has brought along his horse and rulley to collect a load the threshed wheat straw with which to cover his potato pie.

The Villa

'The Villa' on the right at the time the Middlebrough family lived there. They owned Selby Brewery.
Possibly c. 1920's or earlier, certainly before the A 63 By- Pass was built in the 1930's.
In the distance is 'AshVille' while the raised York stone footpath on raised cobbles lasted until the 1950's.
